IT’S BEEN ANOTHER AMAZING YEAR
|
The year commenced with a huge ‘city concert’ in Berlin which was attended by 15,000 + fans, followed by our appearance at major events; including the launch of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the Tenth International Investment Forum in Sochi!!! We headlined the Saturday night with fellow Yorkshire man Joe Cocker headlining Friday (see details below).
“Music stars to play at Sochi forum The Tenth International Investment Forum opened in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Thursday, its cultural program featuring Joe Cocker, Spirit of Smokie and maestro Valery Gergiev. More than six thousand participants from more than 35 countries have gathered for the Tenth Investment Forum in Sochi, the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Cultural celebrities are attending the event alongside politicians and business people. The guests are welcome to attend a number of spectacular shows performed by Spirit of Smokie and Joe Cocker. The British rock star will perform on an open-air stage near the sea terminal.
The five-member Spirit of Smokie are happy to be in Sochi again. During their concert in Sochi last year they exclaimed they were more than delighted to play in such a fabulous city as Sochi.”

EMPIRE OF THE GOLDEN HORDE
|
‘SPIRIT OF SMOKIE’ TO HEADLINE HISTORIC FESTIVAL |
We at S.O.S. are excited by the invitation to perform in the ancient capital of the once powerful empire of The Golden Horde: Sarai-Batu. The festival in Astrakhan Oblast (region) provides one of the most unforgettable concert sites that we or any other band are ever likely to witness. Within the walls of this 13th century complex city lies a rich and turbulent history: A dozen ethnic groups; Bulgars (Tatars, Bashkirs), Mongols, Alans (Ossetians), Circassians, Russians, Byzantians (Greeks) lived in its own quarter. The city was full of wealth, luxury, and splendour, but it also commanded fearsome military might and boasted (by the standards of the Middle Ages) a diverse population of 75,000 people.
“The second annual international open-air festival of modern music culture ‘The Golden Horde 2012’ opens its doors under the walls of the 13th-century reconstructed capital of the Golden Horde - Sarai-Batu, Astrakhan region, Russia from the 24th to 26th of August. The festival reunites all fans of rock and includes performances from 18 Russian cities plus Minsk (Belorussia).
‘Love of art led to Rock’ ‘We are blessed with land, scenery and unique architecture for the biggest musical event in summer 2012! This attracts historians, music fans and musicians alike.’ - Correctly points out the director of the cultural centre of Sarai-Batu.
‘We are pleased to play the best of our music to the roar of the fans’.
Welcome to the Golden Horde 2012 !!! “

GOZO REVIEW

SPIRIT OF SMOKIE CONCERT SETS GOZO ALIGHT!! |
“The Maltese island of Gozo played host to ‘Spirit of Smokie’ on Saturday 14th July. A heat wave in the area made conditions extremely hot for both band and fans who crammed into The Island’s premier venue ‘La Grotta’. At 1 am the band came on stage to rapturous applause in an electric atmosphere! They rocked the fans for almost 2 hours with hits from the album ‘Room with a View’ and Smokie’s original classics.”
S.O.S. WOUD LIKE TO THANK EVERYBODY WHO ATTENDED THE CONCERT AND MADE FOR SUCH AN ENJOYABLE EVENTFUL NIGHT: WE LOOK FORWARD TO OUR RETURN TO SUCH A BEAUTIFUL UNSPOILED AREA OF THE WORLD!

EURO 2012
|
Well! We have arrived back from our second visit in a month to Kiev, Ukraine!! Where we were once again the chosen band invited to play the hits of the original 70’s ‘Smokie’ along with requests from our new album: Room with a View. This time we celebrated the International Football Tournament ‘Euro 2012’ at the famous Ukraine Palace auditorium to an audience which was attended by local fans in Kiew and an equal majority of fans from across Europe (see review below).
“Real Rock has become a classic from long ago and the 20th century music of 70-80s, which seemed so innovative and unexpected, has already entered history.
However, the music of many rock bands, as well as true classic sound relevant even today. This music raises a response among people who were not even born when the creators of new and revolutionary directions of this genre were at the zenith of their glory and the peak of their creativity.
Yesterday in Kiev Palace “Ukraine” a little rock marathon took place, which included the performance of three very famous bands of that music direction heyday: Spirit of Smokie, Sweet and Status Quo.
Status Quo was announced as the headliner of the show, but personally me and my friends (whom i spoke during and after the concert with), radically disagreed with this layout and everything had to be exactly the opposite: The Spirit of Smokie who began the show, were fully in character with their title! Although only the original drummer and the son of the lead singer of the true band performed the lead vocal - The Spirit of Smokie was really hovering the hall! They performed the most famous and popular songs which had become classic long ago - the songs were fulfilled, so remarkably great, driving and genuine, just in the way they were supposed to sound! Though I still felt the difference between the classical and modern voices of the vocalists - a father and his son - it wasn’t reflected in the performance perception at all!
Genius is genius but a human being can meet it just in a single copy, for instance, if Vladimir Horovitz (1) had performed, it does not mean there wouldn’t be anyone who could performe it in a good way, not exactly the same though, but in a very decent way!
(1) V. Horovitz was extraordinary classical pianist and composer.
